For as long as I can remember, I had an affinity for visual arts. Growing up, I became interested in tarot cards. Odd as it may sound, they helped me find meaning in my circumstances, consider solutions for myself and even connect with others. I realize that some people consider tarot cards to be esoteric — the narrow domain of psychics and fortune tellers on the fringes of mysticism — but that was never my view. I view tarot cards in a more practical sense, as a way to consider and categorize ideas, circumstances and potential outcomes — and in so doing, create a sense of order during life’s journey. So this project lies at the confluence of my interests in illustration and tarot.
A tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into two groups: the Major Arcana, which has 22 cards, and the Minor Arcana, which has 56 cards. The Major Arcana cards are considered to hold the most significance for a tarot reading, so I decided to focus on those. A lot of sensitive thought went into the original Arthur Edward Waite cards, so my objective was to re-imagine the characters, visuals and scenes in a way that would be more fresh and accessible to today’s audience. I wanted to breathe new life into the pictorial images, shaking off the dust of the early 20th century and bringing them into the modern era. This is a version of tarot that is inviting and bright, and intended for people of all ages. I hope you enjoy.
